Ocracoke Island Eccentrics, Innovators, & Free Spirits

Philip Howard has been collecting Ocracoke Island history and stories for more than five decades.  He traces his family roots back eight generation, to William Howard who purchased the Island in 1759. He has published two previous books, "Digging Up Uncle Evans" and "Howard Street Hauntings".  In 2020 the Ocracoke Preservation Society presented Philip with its annual Cultural Heritage Award. He lives in his grandparents' 150-year-old cottage just a clam-shell-throw away from his family cemeteries on historic Howard Street.
