Vol 1 "Cape Lookout National Seashore: Paradigm for a Coastal System Ethic", by Stanley R. Riggs.

Coastal geologist Stanley R. Riggs has spent more than six decades studying North Carolina’s barrier islands, documenting how they shift and evolve as living systems shaped by wind, waves and storms.

His new book, “Cape Lookout National Seashore: Paradigm for a Coastal System Ethic,” comes at a time when recent storms underscore how barrier islands function as living systems in constant motion.

Riggs joined East Carolina University in 1967, teaching for more than three decades before becoming a distinguished research professor. He also is known for his service to the state, including years on the Coastal Resources Commission’s Science Panel and the Legislative Commission on Global Climate Change.

The new book begins a multi-volume exploration of the history, culture and natural dynamics of North Carolina’s Continental Margin Province, using research, history and hundreds of photographs, illustrations and maps to show how wind, waves and storms reshape the coast and how North Carolinians can adapt. It is written and designed for a general audience, not scientists.

“I want people to be aware of the different ecosystems and how they work,” Riggs said. “Follow a drop of water through the atmosphere, through the ground, through the plants — if you understand that, you’ll change the way you live.”
