SM 2009 Atlantic Harbor of Refuge Down East Christmas
Photos are on Canvas by Susan Mason of Atlantic, North Carolina. This is her way of expressing how the Down East culture defined its people.
Size: 16" X 20"
The Down East Christmas series emphasizes the art of decoy carving, an art that has it foundation in hunting. Hunting, fishing, and gathering sustained these communities here for hundreds of years, the prints showcase well known Down East communities such as Cape Lookout, Cedar Island, Atlantic, Marshallberg, Harkers Island, Sea Level, North River and Core Sound.
Work boots including rubber white boots are a reminder of those people who have lived and worked as fishermen. Yaupon is Down East holly and its presence in these prints recalls that yaupon was often gathered to decorate many houses at Christmas time.
