Waterfowling on the Susquehanna Flats
by Michael Daley
By the early 19th century, the Susquehanna Flats was world-renowned as one of the greatest waterfowling regions in North America. It was a duck hunter’s paradise, and there were likely more decoys produced in its vicinity than anywhere else in the world. There have been a number of books that have provided identification of most of the decoys and documented the historical facts of this region, and there have been numerous articles in various magazines that have increased the knowledge of the decoy makers who produced them, but there has never before been a concerted effort to showcase the region in one full-color book.
This book will be a fitting tribute to the many industrious men who reaped the incredible bounty of the Susquehanna Flats and those who provided the tools to aid in that pursuit. Some of the finest Upper Chesapeake Bay decoys are included in these pages. It’s hoped that connoisseurs will enjoy our efforts and those previously unaware of these wonderful bird sculptures will gain a better appreciation.
